Putting Off

2There remained among the people of Israel seven tribes whose inheritance had not yet been apportioned. 3So Joshua said to the people of Israel, “How long will you put off going in to take possession of the land, which the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you?–Joshua 18

The Hebrew word has a range of “not letting go, being slack, leaving something, putting off” etc. The text here doesn’t tell us why they had not done what others had. Just that they had.

Why do we put things off that need to be done?

  1. FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN
  2. FEAR OF FAILURE OR BEING SEEN AS FAILING
  3. LAZINESS (PROCRASTINATION IS LAZINESS)
  4. WE PREFER COMFORT OVER UNCERTAINTY
  5. SELFISHNESS (WE WANT CHANGE, BUT NOT TO CHANGE)
  6. CONTROL (WE WANT ALL VARIABLES TO BE FAVORABLE)
  7. MISGUIDED COMMITMENT (WE PREFER FEELINGS OVER ACTION)

All I know is I wanted to lose 50 pounds between October 2021 and October 2022. And I have most of these 7 bouncing around within me. So I was intentional about bringing accountability, I invested in a good plan of action, and I got to work. And I reached the goal three months early.–JMB
