14“And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.–Joshua 23
I am a biblical counselor as well as a pastor. And a bedrock principle of biblical counseling is that the Bible is sufficient to address any area of a person’s life, and especially at the heart level.
The greatest moments in a counseling session are when the counselee reads or hears a passage from the Bible and begins to ponder their own situation. When the Bible clearly has addressed and spoken to their greatest need. When they are able to know themselves what new changes in their situation need to be made and are motivated to live differently.
This is only possible if the counselee at some level has a basic trust of God and a willingness to go to His Word, the Bible, for hope and direction. Joshua reminded the nation that God was faithful and so they could trust him and also his Word. One of the greatest things I can remind my counselees is the exact same thing. Do you go to the Bible to direct both the inside you and the outside you? Do you trust the Author?–JMB
