1Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my guilt? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?” 2And he said to him, “Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. And why should my father hide this from me? It is not so.”—1 Samuel 20
We all love Jonathan. He was a friend of David’s to the end. But he reeks of denial here. Jonathan is either being naive or he fully understood but thought he could manage his family drama. Jonathan experienced Saul’s anger and that changed things for him.
Denial is a stubborn refusal to accept what is true. David simply maintained the truth. If you have a Jonathan in your life, that’s all you can do. Maintain what is true. Pray that your friend one day understands. Seek God’s best for them.
You might be someone’s Jonathan. Pay attention to your own stubbornness.—JMB
