 4He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female…–Matthew 19

Jesus was making an argument against divorce and this was his first point. But this simple sentence is so counter-cultural today that we need to pause and consider. This verse makes three powerful statements.

1. THE UNIVERSE HAS A BEGINNING AND IT IS LINKED TO GOD. You might question Genesis chapters 1-3, but Jesus assumed they were true. I don’t think you are a better theologian than Jesus. God is the reason any of us are here.
2. GOD CREATED HUMANITY. Human beings are an intentional creation of God. We are not products of blind, random, unguided processes.
3. GOD CREATED GENDER. God intentionally created male and God intentionally created female. No matter what segments of our society says, there is no spectrum, there is no confusion regarding male and female. There also is no third option. God intentionally made males to be male and females to be female. A simple study of chromosomes gives evidence to this either/or.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. (John 1:1-3)

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27)
