What Are Your Chariots?

7Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.–Psalm 20

Think of chariots with horses as the military tanks of David’s day. The enemy Philistines (Goliath’s people) were known to deploy chariots by the thousands. Some historical resources claim that they even had as many as 30,000 chariots in the days of King Saul! Talk about an unstoppable force!

But what was to set Israel apart was their trust in God. That trust is faith. So what are your chariots? What replacement to God has hold of your heart? Your chariot fits into what you value and long for most.

  1. Decide what you want most in life. Comfort, pleasure, security, power, peace, favorable opinions, and riches are major ones.
  2. Your chariot will be the one thing in that category you thus use to pursue. Relationships, bank accounts, jobs, advancement, ambition, politics, social media followers and opinions, etc. fit here.

Rather than pursuing an idol most, David trusted God. God’s Name meant more than David’s name. How about you? The best answer in my opinion for 1 above is God’s glory. Pursuing that most pretty much eliminates your chariot for 2. I have to stay intentional in this area because my heart wants to wander to other pursuits. How about you?–JMB
