1My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?…16For dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and feet—
17I can count all my bones—
they stare and gloat over me;
18they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.19But you, O LORD, do not be far off!
O you my help, come quickly to my aid! 20Deliver my soul from the sword,
my precious life from the power of the dog!—Psalm 22
Yes, we read Jesus on the cross here. Jesus fulfilled these cries of David in the most powerful way. But it’s verse 20 that matters most.
David’s cry for deliverance was once-for-all fulfilled in Jesus. For the follower of Jesus death is not the final chapter, but eternal life. Ponder this morning the fact that Jesus didn’t deliver himself so he could deliver you. The Son of David provided the full and final deliverance that his distant father David cried for. We may endure horrible times, but we maintain our perspective in the delivered soul.—JMB
