Peter’s Reality

66After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”–John 6 (with emphasis)

Jesus had just essentially preached his followers from a large crowd to 12. His most recent sermon made it sound like He expected his disciples to literally eat His flesh and drink His blood. And even though he was using a metaphor for the Holy Spirit giving people nourishing life though Jesus (see verse 63), the crowd couldn’t handle it.

So he asked the 12 if they also wanted to leave. Peter seemed to be always the first to talk. I tend to be this way and my son is as well. Here are the three big points Peter made about Jesus.

  1. Jesus offered something nobody else did.
  2. What Jesus offered affected eternity.
  3. Jesus’ identity is able to be not only believed but known.

I know that denying the self and following Jesus can be very difficult. It is hard to be intentional each day and we naturally want to choose ourselves and not Jesus. But the blessings give purpose and perspective to the struggle. I encourage you to interact with Peter’s 3 admissions this morning.–JMB
