Self-Control and Discipline

24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.25Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.26So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.–1 Corinthians 9

The city of Corinth (on a geographical isthmus) held the Isthmian Games every 2 years. They were held to honor the sea god, Poseidon. Winners received a wreath and you will often find Caesar’s statues with that victor’s garland on him. Every Corinthian reading these verses would have thought of their famous games that they hosted. Think today what it would be like for if a certain city always held the Olympic Games and only that city.

When I am in my weight loss groove, food becomes a giant subtraction and addition problem. Subtraction in terms of calories and addition in terms of meeting macronutrient levels. Anything I eat or drink is logged and exercise is my friend. Daily intentionality and self-control are the keys for me. So now imagine the self-denial and self-control required of a world class athlete!

So now picture the fact that you are running life’s race. Jesus cares about the finish line, but also about HOW you are running. It’s as if he is at the end but also with you during mile 11 or 21.

What discipline do you need to pursue? I will list the parts of a person and you can figure out the areas in which you are undisciplined and needing self-control.

Actions?

Words?

Thoughts?

Feelings?

Attitude?

Motivations?

We are not honoring Poseidon, but instead Jesus. Happy Sunday, friends!–JMB
