36Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain!
37Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.–Psalm 119
Here are five points I would like to make regarding this passage.
- The inner person naturally desires selfish ways.
- The psalmist asked God to instead direct those ways to God.
- The eyes naturally desire things that will only pursue selfishness.
- The psalmist asked God to turn his eyes, thoughts, desires to things that have value to God.
- The result of God’s sovereign guidance is promise of a life given by God.
Now I want you to ponder your story. Is there any lasting hope for you as you pursue your selfish desires? Will you ever pursue God unless He sovereignly guides your inner person to do so? God’s work within you precedes your faithfulness decision to follow Him. Are you paying attention to how He is sovereignly guiding you?–JMB
