10He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 12For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.–2 Corinthians 9
Paul was encouraging generous giving among the Corinthians in all their prosperity. Let’s unpack this in 3 points.
- God supplies your every need. He is the one who provides even for your ability to work and provide. I see this as my body sometimes betrays me in my MS with weakness and exhaustion. I don’t take this point #1 for granted and definitely don’t anymore overlook energy and opportunities provided!
- God supplies your ability to be generous with others. Over the summer my family was ordering ice cream and a friend insisted on paying for that ice cream. As I thanked him I told him he was so generous. But in all honesty, I didn’t know if he was being generous or simply being nice. Generosity looks different according to ability. But we can and should all be generous in some way. Even if it is just with a friendly attitude.
- The end result of that generosity is thanksgiving towards the God who ultimately provides. God has equipped you to be a blessing to another he has brought your way. This requires you to be attentive to opportunities and trusting in God. I don’t know what that looks like in your life regarding things. But I can see a generous attitude in another person. Generosity shows up first in time that is spent and care that is shown well before it ever gets to money or things. A person who has encountered you should be thanking God. That is the goal of generosity.–JMB
