29Then Moses said, “Behold, I am going out from you and I will plead with the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow. Only let not Pharaoh cheat again by not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.” 30So Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD. 31And the LORD did as Moses asked, and removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; not one remained. 32But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and did not let the people go.–Exodus 8
Plague 2 revealed the impotence of Heket, the Egyptian goddess of fertility. She was known to have the head of a frog. And nobody could control the frogs Yahweh sent. The magi were demonically able to create more frogs, but only Yahweh could make them go away. How about that, frog goddess!
Plague 3 brought gnats. Some Bible translations have lice instead of gnats. Yahweh’s team literally struck the earth and the earth brought forth horror upon Egypt. Where was Geb, the Egyptian god of the earth?
Plague 4 asked where the lord of the flies was at. For Yahweh sent horrible flies just to the Egyptians and NOT to the Hebrews. What a flex! The Egyptians no doubt expected their god Khepri to help. He was the god of rebirth and creation and oversaw the movement of creatures. He also had the head of a fly.
There are times when God hardened Pharaoh’s heart. But Pharaoh isn’t let off the hook for he also hardened his own heart. When God shows Himself powerful and faithful in your life how do you respond?–JMB
