13Then the LORD said to Moses, “Rise up early in the morning and present yourself before Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, “Let my people go, that they may serve me. 14For this time I will send all my plagues on you yourself, and on your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is none like me in all the earth. 15For by now I could have put out my hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, and you would have been cut off from the earth. 16But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.–Exodus 9
These plagues accomplish great theological truths about the nature of the divine and which God actually exists! They also display true power to the most powerful man on earth. Yes, God even had a purpose for Pharaoh.
For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills. (Romans 9:17-18)
In the fifth plague, all the Egyptian livestock died and none of the Hebrews’ cattle did. Where was Hathor, Egypt’s goddess of love and protection? She was known to have the head of a cow! The cow goddess was not able.
Plague six brought boils upon man and beast that could not be cured by any medicine. The mighty goddess of medicine, Isis, was shown to not be mighty by this plague.
By the seventh plague, Yahweh attacked one of their most important goddesses. Nut, goddess of the sky, was unable to stop the fiery hail from destroying so many of the crops that she previously got credit by the Egyptians for providing!–JMB
