Plagues 8 and 9: How Long, Pharaoh?

3So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me?–Exodus 10

On this journey we have witnessed how Yahweh proved Himself as unique in His category. He had power and should be obeyed. The lifeless idols of Egypt were impotent. God’s question to Pharaoh should hit hard in your heart. I have seen the powerful and mighty faithfulness of God displayed in my life. And yet, when I refuse to have a humble faith, I am stubborn as Pharaoh. How about you?

In the eighth plague, God brought a chaotic swarm of locusts from the sky. The Egyptians worshiped Set(h) and expected him to manage the sky, the desert, and take care of chaos. When Egypt was frightened, they turned to this terrifying god. The Pharaoh’s made Set their patron deity as they controlled Egypt with a heavy hand. Where was the chaotic god of the sky when the chaos fell from the sky?

The ninth plague attacked the god that was so popular that even elementary school students in America thousands of years later learn his name. The darkness Yahweh sent was so powerful it was felt. And in a divine flex, the Hebrews had light when the Egyptians did not. Where was Ra, the god of the sun? He was simply not. None of the alternatives to the God of the Bible exist in a manner that they are a legitimate rival to HaShem.–JMB
