1Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorizeda fire before the LORD, which he had not commanded them. 2And fire came out from before the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. 3Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD has said: ‘Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.’” And Aaron held his peace.–Leviticus 10
- Everyone had just witnessed God supernaturally providing the fire for the sacrifices.
- Nadab and Abide offered up a source of fire that was not the fire God provided.
- God’s sent more miraculous fire to immediately punish them. Crispy critters.
- God expected that those who come before God to present God as holy, unique, and set apart.
- God expected that the people would therefore view God with as much glory as possible.
- Nadab and Abihu’s actions made God’s miracle seem mundane or replaceable and they stole some of God’s glory in the eyes of others.
- Now we examine our hearts and ponder if we are ever like them. What do we therefore communicate about God to God and to others?–JMB
