Morals and Ethics [1-minute read]

1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, I am the LORD your God. 3You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not walk in their statutes. 4You shall follow my rules and keep my statutes and walk in them. I am the LORD your God. 5You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.–Leviticus 18

  1. Morals are standards based upon a system of beliefs or by an external source. Here the standard is God.
  2. Ethics basically define the choices you make as you live your moral beliefs.
  3. The danger with ethics is that when a person lives in a more permissive community they are tempted to not live out their moral convictions.
  4. Both Egypt and Canaan were that for Ancient Israel and the sexual restrictions in this chapter of Leviticus would have set Israel apart from either neighbor.
  5. A person understands Christian morality based upon reading the Bible.
  6. A Christian’s ethics will reveal fruit like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
  7. Your ethics may be similar to your neighbors, but God expects to be the absolute basis of your morality. This is an either/or kind of thing. He either is or He isn’t. Where do you land?–JMB
