1The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 2“The Israelites are to camp around the tent of meeting some distance from it, each of them under their standard and holding the banners of their family.”…34So the Israelites did everything the Lord commanded Moses; that is the way they encamped under their standards, and that is the way they set out, each of them with their clan and family.–Numbers 2
God took important steps to make a mob of ex-slaves into a focused, disciplined, conquering army.
In Chapter 1, every able-bodied man was in place and accounted for.
Here in Chapter 2, we see God’s design for efficient and effective deployment.
The camp described in Numbers 2 resembles the war camp of Pharaoh Rameses II. Both camps were square with an important dwelling in the center. The Egyptian camp had the tent of Pharaoh in the center—he the “human god-king”. Israel’s camp had the sanctuary of Yahweh in the center.
- Again, who is at the center of your journey? It’s either you or God.
- We live in a selfish, me-focused world of “you just do you.”
- God is the God of details and order. He cares about the specifics of your life.
How would the various parts of you change if God was indeed at the center?–JMB
