17“I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel.–Numbers 24
- Balaam prophesied of a “star coming out of Jacob” and a “scepter” to defeat Moab and Edom. Many recognize King David as the scepter (2 Samuel 8:2, 11-14). David’s rule was ordained to deliver Israel (2 Sam. 3:18).
- Though David fulfills Balaam’s star to a point, the greatest Jewish prophet, Isaiah, pointed to the Messiah (Isaiah 11:14, 25:9-11).
- In the NT, another Deliverer is a “star” and His advent was even heralded by a special star that got the attention of both King and Magi. He would be the ultimate deliverer for He would save people from their sins. Even He considers Himself a star (Rev. 22:16).
- Balaam got to see Him. You and I get to spend our days knowing Him, following Him, and trusting Him for our salvation.
- His name is Jesus.–JMB
