63These are the ones counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho. 64Not one of them was among those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai. 65For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.–Numbers 26

Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them [Paul’s ancestors from the book of Numbers]; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. (1 Corinthians 10:5-6)

1. SIN HAS CONSEQUENCES.
2. ONE GENERATION SINNED AND GOD WAITED FOR THEM ALL TO DIE BEFORE THE NEXT GENERATION COULD ENTER.
3. THEIR EVIL HAD TAKEN THE FORMS OF GRUMBLING AND REJECTION, FEAR AND DISTRUST OF GOD’S PLAN.
4. FOR MOST OF US, THEY WERE NOT OUR ANCESTORS, BUT THEY CAN STILL SERVE AS EXAMPLES FOR US.
