Rash Vow [1-minute read]

8But if her husband forbids her when he hears about it, he nullifies the vow that obligates her or the rash promise by which she obligates herself, and the Lord will release her.–Numbers 30

  1. The most rash vow in Scripture was actually made by a man.
  2. Jephthah in Judges 11 made a horrible vow that cost him the life of his daughter.
  3. If Jephthah’s wife or daughter had made the vow, God would have allowed Jephthah to nullify the vow as a layer of protection.
  4. There was no protection for Jephthah’s rash stupidity.
  5. I read in this chapter of Numbers protection for dependent women in the household of their father or husband.
  6. Binding obligations (like the marriage vow) should be taken carefully, prayerfully, sparingly, and in counsel with others.
  7. Rashness should have no part of our wise decisions.–JMB
