Revisiting Big Z

7No inheritance in Israel is to pass from one tribe to another, for every Israelite shall keep the tribal inheritance of their ancestors. 8Every daughter who inherits land in any Israelite tribe must marry someone in her father’s tribal clan, so that every Israelite will possess the inheritance of their ancestors. 9No inheritance may pass from one tribe to another, for each Israelite tribe is to keep the land it inherits.”–Numbers 36

  1. Big Z died with no male heirs and God directed the daughters to directly inherit.
  2. The goal was to keep the land linked to their father’s name and not to that of someone else.
  3. The problem was if Big Z’s daughters married men from other tribes.
  4. Then the land would transfer to those men and therefore land would be taken from one tribe and given to another.
  5. So in order to keep this from happening, God directed the daughters to pick husbands from within the tribe.
  6. Once again, this was God directly caring for the needs of women in a patriarchal society. God once protected Big Z’s name and now his tribe.
  7. This also teaches us that God cares about our families and our situations. Give your anxieties to Him, for He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).–JMB
