1If you see your fellow Israelite’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to its owner. 2If they do not live near you or if you do not know who owns it, take it home with you and keep it until they come looking for it. Then give it back. 3Do the same if you find their donkey or cloak or anything else they have lost. Do not ignore it.–Deuteronomy 22
My next-door neighbor throws me a text or gives me a call when he is away for the weekend. He asks me to bring in his garbage cans and to watch for any suspicious activity around his house. I do the same with him when I am away. We are good neighbors to each other.
That’s essentially what is behind our verses in Deuteronomy today. I pray for my kids when I drop them off at school that they would be a good friend and make good decisions. That’s how I aim to be with my neighbors.
Don’t ignore an opportunity to care for your neighbor and be a blessing in his or her life.–JMB
