Covenant Blessings

1If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. 2All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God…15However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you…–Deuteronomy 28

In the same way, after the supper [Jesus] took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” (Luke 22:20)

But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:21-23)

I added emphasis to the above verses.

  1. In the original covenant, blessings came through obedience.
  2. But everyone sins and breaks God’s law at one point.
  3. And none of us has an answer for that sin on our own.
  4. In the new covenant, being justified is now a matter that is apart from the law and instead by faith in Jesus.
  5. Being right with God and being blessed by Him is through that faith. It all depends upon Jesus.
  6. You don’t have the ability to glorify God completely on your own, but Jesus did. There is now hope when before there was only despair.
  7. Responding to Jesus in faith, depending upon Him alone, is the way the blessings of the new covenant come to you.–JMB
