Three Leadership Traits

7Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. 8The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”–Deuteronomy 31

Joshua was going to lead the people. Moses gave him three basic categories or traits. Let’s take them in reverse order.

  1. WHAT HE MUST KNOW. God would go before. God would be with him. God swore to give the land. God would never leave or forsake him. Godly leads have a good basic theology. Lead with that knowledge.
  2. HOW HE MUST BE. Be strong. Be courageous. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged. Theology defines identity.
  3. WHAT HE MUST DO. Go with the people. Divide the land among them. What you know and how you are influence what you do. Know-Be-Do.–JMB
