10Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.–Matthew 4
- Some people like to picture Jesus vs. Satan like an equal fight.
- But even though Satan attacks Jesus with temptation, none of the
“punches” hit. - Satan is simply not Jesus’ equal or even in Jesus’ category.
- The first point of the temptation passage is to show that Jesus was tempted to compromise His purpose and ministry and He did not.
- The second point of this passage is to show that Jesus clearly is God.
- All of our temptation are at their core a compromise, so we look to Jesus for strength and identity.
- Temptations provide an opportunity to trust Jesus to lead us. He is able to command Satan in a way we are not. He is the one to depend upon during times of struggle.–JMB
