14“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.–Matthew 5
- You are a lamp. What purpose does a lamp have?
- Jesus expected those listening to Him to shine a light.
- The ones needing the light are the people around you, relationships that God has given you.
- Your light is the way you live. The outward parts of your being are your words, deeds, and attitudes.
- Jesus assumed that people would see the outward you and respond.
- Jesus said “your Father.” He pictured a person who doesn’t have your faith still praising your God because of the good way you live your life.
- Good deeds are not the same as faith, but the outside world looks at the way you live your life more than the faith you claim. Your life is noticed before your faith.–JMB
