3Now Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons but only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. 4They went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance along with the brothers of their father, according to the Lord’s command.–Joshua 17
- Big Z died with no male heirs (Numbers 27) in a world concerned with keeping family property with male heirs.
- He already died with no legal heirs, and so the daughters ensured there would not be the double issue of his land passing to another unrelated man. This was seen as an act of selfless faith.
- God rewarded the daughters’ faith with a new law on the books.
- Here in Joshua 17, what was commanded actually came true.
- We trust in a God who remembers His people and keeps His promises.–JMB
