6They are to stay in that city until they have stood trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then they may go back to their own home in the town from which they fled.”–Joshua 20
Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. (Hebrews 7:23-25)
- This chapter spoke of cities of refuge.
- If a person was accused of manslaughter, until his trial he could be safe from family revenge if he stayed in the city.
- The interesting wrinkle here is the death of the high priest.
- High priests didn’t die all the time, so this was a special event.
- It’s as if when the man who represents you before God dies, his death wipes the slate clean for you.
- I think this is a wonderful foreshadowing of Jesus and His sacrificial death.
- Because of the cross of Christ, sinners like you and me can have our slates wiped clean. How grateful are you?–JMB
