12“What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.
13“Crucify him!” they shouted.
14“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
15Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.–Mark 15
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. (1 Peter 3:18)
Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. (Hebrews 7:27)
- Jesus did not deserve the death He died.
- Jesus died in the place of the repentant sinner to bring that person to God.
- By faith, we trust that Jesus’ death counts on our behalf to pay for our sins. Jesus was not a martyr, but instead a sacrifice.
- God’s wrath at our sins instead was placed on Jesus, who had no sin of His own. We are in Jesus saved from that wrath.
- He was the only one qualified to make that transaction happen.
- Your sins have separated you from God.
- Your only hope is in Jesus, who died in your place. Trust in Him today for your salvation.–JMB
