Right in Your Own Eyes?

25In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.–Judges 21

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice. (Proverbs 12:15)

Israel was never more rebellious than in the book of Judges.

Their standard: doing whatever seemed right to them.

You are either your own standard or you turn to someone or something else.

The standard you follow will either encourage you to be yourself or convict you to follow a different path.

If you are your own standard then you have no concrete basis for right and wrong that is able to be applied to other people. If you are allowed to simply follow your heart then others can do the same and society crumbles into moral relativism and selfish narcissism.

If you are a proclaimed follower of God but instead follow yourself, then you are living as a functional hypocrite.

Your “God” is either selfishly within you or selflessly not you. You are either submitting to God or being led along by whatever feels right to you.

if you claim to follow Jesus, then you submit to the guidance of the Bible and receive counsel by trusted friends or mentors who thus apply the Bible to your situations.–JMB
