The Blind Beggar Truly Saw Jesus

35As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”

38He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

39Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

40Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41“What do you want me to do for you?”

Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God. (Luke 18:42-43)

It’s as if that blind beggar had once heard Isaiah 16 read in the synagogue…

In mercy a throne will be established; in faithfulness a man will sit on it—one from the house of David—one who in judging seeks justice and speeds the cause of righteousness. (Isaiah 16:5, with emphasis)

The beggar recognized Jesus as the Messiah and proclaimed his rule over even things like blindness. He called upon the mercy that would one day typify his reign. All we who turn to Jesus in faith for salvation depend upon the same Messiah for the same mercy. Jesus rules in our lives and provides for our deepest need.–JMB
