Jesus Saw Himself More the Waiter Than the Customer

24A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.27For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.–Luke 22

  1. The disciples were in the presence of Jesus and were ranking themselves on greatness.
  2. In weaker moments, I have likewise worried myself about influence, success, or legacy as I compared and contrasted with others.
  3. That kind of thinking misses the point about leadership.
  4. Leadership serves and equips. Greatness is displayed in service.
  5. And honestly, how do you treat waitresses in a restaurant or stewardesses on a plane? These attitudes communicate much about you.
  6. Jesus saw Himself more as someone who refills the drinks rather than having His drink refilled.
  7. This is Jesus. The Lord of all the universe. My goodness, what an attitude check for both you and me.–JMB
