17Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the Lord at Mizpah 18and said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’ 19But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, ‘No, appoint a king over us.’–1 Samuel 10
Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. (Psalm 146:3)
- This was a day long awaited in Israel’s history.
- They finally got the coronation of their first king.
- But in wanting a king they were in fact rejecting God as King.
- Up until that time, Israel had been unique in that they were led by God rather than a political leader.
- But it was God who delivered them from their enemies, not some king.
- We would each do good to remember that. Politics do not bring salvation.
- In what ways are you trusting in man when you should be trusting in God? In what ways have you rejected God over the things of man?–JMB
