God Cannot Be Reduced

48“However, the Most High does not live in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says: 49“ ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. ‘Or where will my resting place be 50Has not my hand made all these things?’–Acts 7

  1. In Stephen’s final moments, he quoted Isaiah 66:1-2.
  2. He was criticizing the religious elite who placed a lot of importance in the Jerusalem Temple.
  3. Just imagine how God describes Heaven and Earth here. How majestic is this God of ours?
  4. A couple of quick theological points. First, God cannot be reduced to dwelling in a building. Anyone who says “God’s house” has to be speaking spiritually or metaphorically.
  5. Second, God isn’t waiting on receiving things from us like a house or food. He absolutely doesn’t need a house or food or anything. God cannot need.
  6. So God can not be physically limited or reduced. God also doesn’t need you like you need Him.
  7. These thoughts are reassuring, but also humbling.–JMB
