David Confessed and Repented

11“This is what the Lord says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight. 12You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.’ ”

13Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”–2 Samuel 12

Have mercy on me [David], O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. (Psalm 51:1-2)

  1. David had thought he had completely covered up his sins with Bathsheba.
  2. However, the prophet Nathan confronted David on those very sins.
  3. David, to his credit, fully owned up to his sins.
  4. I invite you to read all of 2 Samuel 12 and then follow up with David’s prayer to God in Psalm 51. I have presented just portions for you today.
  5. What sin are you hiding that you need to own?
  6. Confession is agreeing with God that your selfishness and sin are problems. Repentance is changing your mind, an allegiance turning to Jesus and away from yourself.
  7. How you confess and repent defines your tolerance for your own hypocrisy. I know it did and does for me.–JMB
