Mephibosheth and Humility

28All my grandfather’s [Saul’s] descendants deserved nothing but death from my lord the king, but you gave your servant a place among those who eat at your table. So what right do I [Mephibosheth] have to make any more appeals to the king?”–2 Samuel 19

…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God… (Romans 3:23)

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

  1. David was reentering Judah and reclaiming his throne from his traitorous son.
  2. He was also figuring out who had supported him and who had supported Absalom’s coup.
  3. Mephibosheth and Saul’s servant Ziba had an issue over the land David let them keep.
  4. Mephibosheth, rather than pressing his claim, adopted an attitude of humility before David.
  5. His attitude reminded me this morning of the humility each of us should have before God. I posted some verses to memorize and keep within your heart. They are good reminders.
  6. None of us can boast before God or deserve His grace. We are all sinners who can only depend on Jesus for salvation. We cannot depend upon ourselves.
  7. How can you stay humble and dependent upon God right now?–JMB
