In the Beginning Was the Word

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it…

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.–John 1

  1. As students of Scripture, we understand that in the beginning was God.
  2. The Ancient Greeks (research Heraclitus) spoke of God having a logos or Word that they considered to be an active part of God or with God.
  3. John claims here that that Word was not only with God, but also was God. John never says that they are different Gods. This means that God is one, but with two distinct Persons.
  4. And this Word created everything and brought forth life.
  5. The darkness would try to overcome this Word, but His light would instead shine in the midst of that darkness.
  6. Then this Word became flesh and dwelt among John and his people. John called Him the Son and proclaimed Him to be different from the Father.
  7. John spoke of Jesus, God the Son. You either believe Jesus is God or you do not. You either see Jesus as Divine and full of grace and truth, or you do not.–JMB
