Jesus and the Spiritual Thirst

13Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this [well] water will be thirsty again, 14but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”–John 4

  1. Jesus was speaking with a woman in public at a well.
  2. He was having a theological discussion that was going to Jesus’ identity as Messiah.
  3. Jesus not only asked for a drink of water, but decided to use it like a rabbi would as a teaching metaphor.
  4. Jesus first talks about two kinds of thirsts. There is the physical thirst that goes away but always comes back, and then a spiritual thirst that can only be satisfied by the “water” Jesus gives.
  5. In John 7:37-38, Jesus will invite the spiritually thirsty to come to Him and drink and that the person person who believes in Him will have “rivers of living water flowing within them.”
  6. In John 14:26, Jesus will speak of the Holy Spirit, who will teach people to remember the words of Jesus. The Holy Spirit makes faith possible in a person.
  7. That faith in Jesus leads to eternal life. This is what He offered the Samaritan woman in our text today. This is what He offers us. The question remains: will you keep going everywhere else to try to satisfy your spiritual “thirst,” or will you realize that only Jesus can do so?–JMB
