13Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this [well] water will be thirsty again, 14but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”–John 4
- Jesus was speaking with a woman in public at a well.
- He was having a theological discussion that was going to Jesus’ identity as Messiah.
- Jesus not only asked for a drink of water, but decided to use it like a rabbi would as a teaching metaphor.
- Jesus first talks about two kinds of thirsts. There is the physical thirst that goes away but always comes back, and then a spiritual thirst that can only be satisfied by the “water” Jesus gives.
- In John 7:37-38, Jesus will invite the spiritually thirsty to come to Him and drink and that the person person who believes in Him will have “rivers of living water flowing within them.”
- In John 14:26, Jesus will speak of the Holy Spirit, who will teach people to remember the words of Jesus. The Holy Spirit makes faith possible in a person.
- That faith in Jesus leads to eternal life. This is what He offered the Samaritan woman in our text today. This is what He offers us. The question remains: will you keep going everywhere else to try to satisfy your spiritual “thirst,” or will you realize that only Jesus can do so?–JMB
