Jesus and That Prayer

1After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.–John 17

  1. John 17 is where a big prayer of Jesus is recorded.
  2. John records this prayer one chapter before Jesus’ arrest and two chapters before His crucifixion. So this is a big ministry moment.
  3. Jesus proclaims that He gives eternal life to all the Father gives Him.
  4. This means that you are chosen by the Father to be saved by Jesus.
  5. A key moment here is Jesus talking about His eternal, pre-existent state as God.
  6. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, but He is the Son of God made flesh. The Son of God always has existed. When God the Father said in Genesis 1, “Let us make man in our image,” we know why he used a plural pronoun. God the Son and Holy Spirit were there, too!
  7. Jesus speaks of eternal life in these verses as knowing both the Father and the Son. Does that describe you? If not, I invite you to own your sins before God and to trust Jesus alone for your salvation, placing your faith in Him.–JMB
