20Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved [John] was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) 21When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
22Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”–John 21
- Peter was in a difficult emotional place.
- First, he was happy that Jesus had reinstated him to ministry.
- But he was hurt that Jesus had to ask him three times if Peter loved Him.
- Then he had received a prophecy from Jesus about how Peter would later die.
- Peter turned it into a jealousy moment. What about the other close disciple? How would that one die?
- And then Jesus shut that line of thinking down. Don’t worry about other people and what Jesus has done, is doing, or would do in their lives.
- Just focus on following Jesus. You can’t control other people, but you can control yourself. Peter is so relatable for many.–JMB
