4Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself.
5Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.–Proverbs 26
- Is this a side-by-side biblical contradiction? These verses are literally one right after another.
- Instead, think of these verses in terms of boundaries and influence.
- In verse 4, a boundary is placed UPON YOURSELF. By the way, if you are a person that likes to set boundaries, just remember that the most effective boundaries are ones you place upon yourself!
- If you get into a war of words with a foolish person, you will sink down to their level.
- Verse 5 speaks of INFLUENCE.
- If you wisely instruct a fool, you may be using your influence for his benefit.
- The first verse speaks more about your benefit and the second verse about his. The first is more selfish and the second selfless.–JMB
