Boundaries and Influence

4Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself.
5Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.–Proverbs 26

  1. Is this a side-by-side biblical contradiction? These verses are literally one right after another.
  2. Instead, think of these verses in terms of boundaries and influence.
  3. In verse 4, a boundary is placed UPON YOURSELF. By the way, if you are a person that likes to set boundaries, just remember that the most effective boundaries are ones you place upon yourself!
  4. If you get into a war of words with a foolish person, you will sink down to their level.
  5. Verse 5 speaks of INFLUENCE.
  6. If you wisely instruct a fool, you may be using your influence for his benefit.
  7. The first verse speaks more about your benefit and the second verse about his. The first is more selfish and the second selfless.–JMB
