Imagine Those First Two Steps

25Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.29“Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”–Matthew 14 (emphasis)

  1. Some people get terrified if they hear a strange noise in their house. I can’t imagine what it was like for them on that boat! Remember, this is a time well before computers or special effects like you see in the movies.
  2. I love how Peter looked for the miracle to happen by asking Jesus first.
  3. Would you have gotten out of the boat? Jesus clearly said, “Come.” Would you have done so?
  4. Some people read the clear words of Scripture and still struggle to trust and obey God.
  5. Now imagine taking those first two steps. Wow. We still use “walk on water” as a phrase today.
  6. We remember Peter here for doubting and sinking, but he still is one of two people in history to actually have walked on water. You will ask Peter about this in Heaven one day.
  7. In what area of your life is the Bible clear, but you are not trusting God? Is He calling you to step out of the “boat?”–JMB
