Is Jesus Unique or One Among Many?

4Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

5While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

6When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.–Matthew 17

  1. Moses and Elijah were known for communicating the words of God and for their miracles.
  2. You might say Moses represented the Law and Elijah the Prophets.
  3. Moses talked with God face to face and Elijah never died, but got personally escorted to Heaven by God!
  4. But neither Moses nor Elijah were the Son of God. When God said that about Jesus, the Father was communicating the divinity of the Son.
  5. It no longer was sufficient to just have the words of the Old Covenant, the Old Testament. If so, then what Moses and Elijah offered would be enough.
  6. Salvation history required Jesus and this New Covenant in Him. Jesus wasn’t Moses or Elijah’s equal. He is their God.
  7. Is Jesus unique in your story or simply one among many?–JMB
