14The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. 15But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant. 16“Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.
“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, “‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?”–Matthew 21
Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. (Psalm 8:1-2, with emphasis)
- Jesus had just entered Jerusalem to the praise of the crowds.
- Upon entering the Temple, Jesus treated the official religious market there as a hero might treat an enemy or foe.
- Jesus then healed the blind and lame who came to Him.
- So to recap. Jesus was welcomed to Jerusalem as the Messiah (Zechariah 9:9). He cleared out the Temple like the Messiah (Isaiah 56:7). He even healed people like the Messiah (Psalm 103:3).
- But once the people start calling Jesus the Son of David, or Messiah, the official religious leaders oppose.
- Jesus then quoted to them the verse that they as Rabbis knew finished with “silencing the foes of God.”
- Who are you in this story (and you can’t say Jesus)? The ones praising Him? The ones being healed by Him? The ones Jesus drove out? Or the ones opposing Him?–JMB
