Beware the Smart Person Trap

6Do not add to his [God’s] words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.–Proverbs 30

  1. Beware the trap of leaning on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). You may be really smart and your thoughts about Scripture may be indeed highly nuanced.
  2. But your commentary on the Bible is not more important than the actual Bible.
  3. Some people add their thoughts to Scripture and say things like, “This is what God really meant.”
  4. Others subtract parts of the Bible they don’t like and say, “We don’t have to read this section.”
  5. Just understand that every historical cult has started by either adding to or subtracting from the Bible.
  6. Either a person trusts God and the Bible or they don’t. Changing God’s Word will only lead to a rebuke from the very God you claim to serve. Not a good thing.
  7. So when you read the Bible, don’t make your understanding of it the same importance as the Bible, itself. I blog every day, so I must also take this seriously. My thoughts on Scripture are absolutely not as important as Scripture.–JMB
