Levi and Sons

16 The sons of Levi: Gershom, Kohath, and Merari.–1 Chronicles 6

  1. The genealogy in today’s Scripture reading took me down memory lane. Many years ago, I taught a class in the Old Testament book of Numbers.
  2. And the clans of Levi’s sons were given the task of transporting the Tabernacle, “God’s Mobile Home” through the wilderness wanderings (Numbers chapter 4).
  3. The Merarites were the tanks. They carried all the heavy beams of wood that made up the tabernacle and the fence.
  4. The Gershonites transported all of the fabrics and skins. The Temple curtain that tore at Jesus’s death (Mark 15:38)? They would have carried something like that.
  5. The Kothathites were special for they also had the priests as part of their ranks. Not all Kohathites were priests, but only the ones who were also sons of Aaron. The Kohathites transported the holy things of God.
  6. Think of if you had to move Grandma’s kitchen for her. She would tenderly pack her precious dishes in newspaper and into boxes and you would carry the boxes. The priests wrapped up God’s holy items in special cloth and the Kohathites carried the covered items.
  7. The sons of Levi had a special role. How do you serve God? In what ministry lane do you volunteer?–JMB
