David and Discipline

1In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. (2 Samuel 11)

  1. These appear to be the start of the same event.
  2. The 2 Samuel passage is the beginning of the infamous Bathsheba adultery episode.
  3. The chronicler seems to just want to highlight David’s military victory.
  4. Both episodes mention that kings usually go out to battle.
  5. Both episodes mention that David stayed home, as if that was significant.
  6. Discipline maintains healthy, repeatable habits and is often broken when those routines are broken.
