David and Temple Guards

12These divisions of the gatekeepers, corresponding to their chief men, had duties, just as their brothers did, ministering in the house of the LORD. –1 Chronicles 26

So the LORD said to Aaron, “You and your sons and your father’s house with you shall bear iniquity connected with the sanctuary, and you and your sons with you shall bear iniquity connected with your priesthood. And with you bring your brothers also, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, that they may join you and minister to you while you and your sons with you are before the tent of the testimony. They shall keep guard over you and over the whole tent, but shall not come near to the vessels of the sanctuary or to the altar lest they, and you, die. (Levticus 18:1-3)

  1. David established a Temple security force.
  2. This is keeping in line with the Leviticus 18 rules for the previous Tabernacle.
  3. The Levites had to keep people from willfully or mistakenly touching things or going places they shouldn’t in God’s House.
  4. We are grateful that in Jesus, we no longer have any holiness prohibitions from God.
  5. We can boldly draw near to God in and through Jesus (Hebrews 4:16).
  6. Two quick questions: Do you draw near to God? You have no restrictions in your faith to boldly approach God in faith and prayer.
  7. In light of today’s text, what boundaries or guardrails have you biblically put on yourself in your own life? How about appropriate accountability partners that may serve like guardians? My Christian walk always improves when I do this.–JMB
