Jesus and a Bronze Snake

14Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”16For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.–John 3

  1. Jesus was referencing Numbers chapter 21.
  2. In that day, the people grumbled against the leadership of God and Moses and so God sent venomous snakes to bite the people.
  3. Many died and so people started confessing their sins of rebellion.
  4. God instructed Moses to construct and lift up a bronze snake and all those who went before that snake lived.
  5. Jesus’ point was that he was going to be lifted up and that all who turn to Jesus will experience eternal life.
  6. The bronze snake didn’t make sense, but it was God’s chosen means of salvation. Deliverance that day was only found with God’s chosen means.
  7. The death of the Son of God, the Messiah, also doesn’t make sense to many people. But Jesus is God’s unique, chosen means of salvation. But will you confess your sins and trust Jesus alone to save you?–JMB
