He Did What Was Evil

4When Jehoram had ascended the throne of his father and was established, he killed all his brothers with the sword, and also some of the princes of Israel. 5Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. 6And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife. And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. 7Yet the LORD was not willing to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and since he had promised to give a lamp to him and to his sons forever.–2 Chronicles 21

  1. Jehoshaphat was a good king, but he raised a bad king.
  2. Jehoram was more like Ahab than like David.
  3. He followed worldly standards more than he followed Godly ones.
  4. God’s covenant with David was not limited by human action.
  5. How about you and the standards you keep?
  6. Would those closest to you describe you as more worldly or Godly?
  7. Are your daily choices more informed by the Bible or by the world?–JMB

  1. It’s easy to read stories like this and focus on the kings, but harder when it becomes about our own daily patterns and influences. It leaves a quiet question hanging that most of us probably shouldn’t rush past.
